Hybrid and Plugin Line Up

What are the differences between plug-insrnand hybrids?” and “Does an electric vehicle cost more?

These are two questions that are often asked by people who want to learn about the characteristics of these two types of vehicles.

rnrnrnrn

With the age of electric cars upon usrnd the increasing demand for sustainable transport solutions, the interest inrnboth hybrid vehicles and plug-in vehicles will continue to grow in the years torncome.

rnrnrnrn

If you plan to purchase a new vehiclernsoon, you might want to know what these new electrified powertrainrntransportation systems have to offer. Perhaps you want to know what it’s likernowning an electric vehicle.

rnrnrnrn

In this post, we’ll discuss therndifferences between plug-ins and hybrids to help you understand what sets eachrnone apart.

rnrnrnrn

What is a Plug-in Vehicle?

rnrnrnrn

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)rnis a type of automobile that utilizes batteries and fuel to power its electricrnmotor and internal combustion engine respectively.

rnrnrnrn

For the environment-conscious, thesernvehicles generally consume electric power first until their levels reach arncertain threshold. Once it does, they automatically switch to their combustionrnengines to start using fuel.

rnrnrnrn

Charging PHEV batteries can be accomplishedrnin 3 ways:

  • Using an external electricrnpower source
  • Using the internal combustionrnengine
  • By applying regenerativernbraking

rnrnrnrn

In regenerative braking, the electricrnmotor of plug-in hybrid vehicles works as a generator whenever they brake, whichrnrecaptures the energy that would otherwise have been lost.

rnrnrnrn

What is a Hybrid Vehicle?

rnrnrnrn

A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is arntype of automobile that uses an internal combustion engine together with one orrnmore electric motors that consume battery-stored energy. An HEV offers the bestrnof both electric and conventional vehicles by having high fuel economy and range.

rnrnrnrn

HEVs are categorized into two distinctrnfuel-efficient system designs. These are:

  • Mild hybrid system: A mild hybrid systemrnin an HEV means that the vehicle uses a battery along with its electric motorrnfor power. This allows its engine to turn off whenever it stops moving thusrnmaking it more fuel-efficient.
  • Full hybrid system:  Full hybrid systems have bigger batteries andrnelectric motors that are more powerful than its counterpart. Although it costsrnmore, a full hybrid system offers better fuel economy than a mild hybridrnsystem.

rnrnrnrn

Main Difference Between Plug-ins and Hybrids

rnrnrnrn

Hybrid vehicles acquire energy from bothrntheir electric motor and gasoline engine. These two systems work with eachrnother to provide the power they need to function. A hybrid car would alsornconsume fuel to assist in recharging its battery power.

rnrnrnrn

In plug-in hybrid vehicles, theyrnprimarily operate with their electric motors by consuming energy from theirrnbatteries. A PHEV won’t consume gasoline unless it runs out of battery power.

What is the best type of electric car for you? Do you want a gas-electric hybrid vehicle, a plug-in hybrid or an electric vehicle? There are many different types to choose from, so let the team at Honda Auto Center of Bellevue assist in your search.

rnrn

Hybrid cars remain a popular choice among drivers who want the benefits of both gasoline and electric vehicles. With the extensive total driving range and exceptional efficiency, a hybrid car is a smart choice for those looking to reduce the time and money they spend at the gas pump.

rnrn

Plug-in hybrid cars are the perfect solution for motorists seeking to reduce their carbon footprint but who don’t want to drastically change how they refuel their vehicles. Plug-in hybrid electric cars have both an electric motor and a gasoline engine.

rnrn

Plug-in hybrids can be plugged into a normal household outlet and can use full-electric power until it’s depleted, at which point they switch over to the gas-electric hybrid powertrain for the extensive driving range, just like a traditional automobile. Plug-in hybrids allow drivers to fill up on gas and recharge the electric battery, meaning there are multiple ways to refuel for your commute or cruising around town.

rnrn

Then, there are electric vehicles, which only use electricity as a power source. Full EVs can create “range anxiety” among drivers since many electric cars can’t match the total driving range of hybrids, but that is gradually changing. The downside to electric cars is that they can take hours to recharge, plus their relatively limited range.

rnrn

Honda Hybrid & Plug-In Hybrid Models

rnrn

Honda has a storied history of hybrids and electrified vehicles, and it helped pioneer the industry with the original Honda Insight. Today, Honda offers an array of electrified models that harness the power and efficiency of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric car technology.

rnrn

Let’s take a look at some of Honda’s highly advanced electrified automobiles:

rnrn

    rn

  • Honda Insight: Honda’s dedicated hybrid model, the Insight, is a sleek and stylish compact sedan that is as fuel-efficient as it is well-equipped. The new Insight is one of the new Honda cars for sale that utilizes the automaker’s advanced Two-Motor Hybrid System.
  • rn

  • Honda Accord Hybrid: If you’re looking for a mid-size sedan that excels at everything — including efficiency — look no further than the Accord Hybrid. Based on Honda’s highly lauded mid-size car, the new Accord Hybrid takes fuel economy to the next level with advanced hybrid tech.
  • rn

  • Honda CR-V Hybrid: Honda’s popular crossover SUV, the CR-V, is now available as a hybrid. The new CR-V Hybrid brings Honda’s Two-Motor Hybrid System to the world of highly versatile CUVs and SUVs, providing drivers and families with cabin space and fuel economy that’s tough to top.
  • rn

  • Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid: Motorists who would like to enjoy the benefits of both hybrid and full-electric driving can turn to the new Clarity Plug-In Hybrid. Plug in, charge, then go with a limited all-electric driving range before the gas-electric hybrid powertrain seamlessly kicks in to provide extended range.

If you’re a Seattle area motorist who’s interested in owning an electric vehicle (EV), you must surely have plenty of questions.

rnrn

Does an electric vehicle cost more? What are the charging options for an EV? How do EVs compare to hybrids and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles?

rnrn

Here at Honda Auto Center of Bellevue, we’re eager to assist you in finding answers to your EV ownership questions! Take a look at our review of the EV ownership experience to learn about the costs of owning an electric vehicle, EV trends and more.

rnrn

Does An Electric Vehicle Cost More?

rnrn

If you’re wondering about the true cost of ownership for an electric vehicle, you’re not alone. Many drivers are curious about making the switch to an EV but are unsure what that would mean for their transportation costs.

rnrn

The cost structure of owning an electric vehicle is a bit different than a conventional car, truck or SUV. That’s in part because a new EV may have a slightly higher price than a comparable internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle.

rnrn

However, thanks to federal and state incentives and increased EV manufacturing and competition, electric cars are increasingly affordable.

rnrn

But the running costs of an electric vehicle differ, too. When you switch to an EV, you’ll no longer be concerned with the cost of gasoline or when your car will need its next oil change.

rnrn

So maybe your upfront costs or monthly financing or lease payment will be higher with an EV, but you’ll likely see savings on fuel and maintenance costs over the ownership period.

rnrn

EV Ownership Tips

rnrn

A top tip for new EV owners is to plan ahead for trips and charging. Even in cities like Bellevue, WA, where the public EV charging infrastructure continues to grow, charging stations aren’t nearly as prevalent as gas pumps. That means EV motorists should plan out their trips a bit more than with a gasoline-powered automobile.

rnrn

If you’re able to install a charging point at your home, you’ll be in a great position to take advantage of the full benefits of owning an electric vehicle. That’s because you’ll have a reliable home base for charging your EV overnight.

rnrn

Then, during the day, when you’re commuting or running errands, you can rely on public fast-charging stations around Redmond, WA, or wherever your daily driving takes you.

rnrn

Now that we’ve covered some EV ownership tips, let’s consider the current EV trends and where the automotive industry is headed.

rnrn

EV Trends

rnrn

The automotive industry is continuing the push toward electrification with a range of new and upcoming electrified vehicles. For instance, Honda has announced the upcoming fully electric 2024 Honda Prologue, its first-ever electric SUV that will offer versatility and driving range on par with its current lineup of rugged SUVs.

rnrn

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models remain a popular and affordable alternative to EVs, and Honda has a strong lineup of these types of electrified vehicles for sale right now.

rnrn

From the Honda Accord Hybrid and Insight sedans to the new CR-V Hybrid crossover SUV, Honda offers a gasoline-electric hybrid model for just about every lifestyle and budget.

rnrn

Honda is a leader in plug-in hybrid electric vehicle technology, too. The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid blends the best of electric vehicles and hybrids, thanks to its convenient charging options and extended driving range.

rnrn

Whether you’re shopping for a fully electric vehicle or an electrified SUV or sedan, there are plenty of options today, with more arriving soon. Head to your local Bellevue Honda auto dealership near Sammamish, WA, and discover the complete lineup of Honda electrified vehicles for yourself!

When the economic environment grows,rn there’s a tendency that new car prices will rise with it as well. This increasern in cost has led people to consider pre-owned vehicles for sale as they appearrn to be a smart investment for those with a budget.

rnrn

In fact, so long as you know how to buy a used car, arn second-hand vehicle can be an excellent alternative when you need a quickrn replacement for your existing ride.

rnrn

Top Reasons to Buy a Used Car

rn

With that said, let’s take a look at arn few reasons why you should consider the used cars for sale in your nearbyrn dealership.

rnrn

    rn

  • rn

The new look and smell usually last for a longrn time:

Some peoplern believe that vehicles that were released 3 to 4 yearsrn ago will look old and outdated, yet that’s simply not the case. The appearancern and interior smell of such a car can still give off that new-car vibe.rn Additionally, car manufacturers update the features and designs of theirrn vehicles around 4 to 6 years on average, which means that a car that’s a fewrn years old may still appear brand new but at a cheaper cost.rn

  • rn

  • rn

New and used cars are almost identical:

rn rn Most vehicles nowadays are made to last longer, which means that brand newrn vehicles aren’t necessarily more reliable than used ones. Modern technologyrn means that used cars not only last longer but can hold their value throughoutrn the years as well.rn

  • rn

  • rn

Minimal differences in coverage andrn warranties:

Peace of mind isn’trn limited to new cars – a used car that’s only arn year old can be considered a decent alternative. This is because a year-oldrn used vehicle will have minimal differences to the coverage and warranties to thatrn of a new vehicle.rn

  • rn

  • rn

Registering a used vehicle takes less time andrn money:

Obtaining thern registration for a used car is often faster comparedrn to getting a new one. At Honda Auto Center Bellevue, we can help you with all thern necessary documents and steps so you can register your used vehicle fast and atrn a lower cost.rn

  • rn

  • rn

    Used cars depreciate less:

The value ofrn new cars depreciate at a faster rate compared to used cars. Since a pre-ownedrn vehicle has a tendency of depreciating at a slower rate, this makes it arn potentially better investment especially for people who are on a budget.rn

Fuel Saving Tips

Fuel Saving Tipsrnrn
rnrn

Studies have repeatedly shown that personal driving habits are the single biggest factor that affects vehicle fuelrn consumption. Adopting new and improved driving behaviors not only makes car travel safer but can also contribute torn significant savings at the gas pump. Here are some simple ways you can improve your car’s gas mileage:

rn

Ownership, Maintenance & Repairs

rn

rn

When buying a car, look for models that offer the best fuel economy in theirrn class. For most drivers, anrn optional larger and/or more-powerful engine is unnecessary.

rn

Maintain your car according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Modern carsrn don’t need “tune ups,” butrn regular service will ensure optimum fuel economy, performance and longevity.

rn

Take your car to a repair shop as soon as possible if the “Check Engine” lightrn comes on. This indicates arn problem that is causing excessive emissions and likely reducing fuel economy.

rn

Keep tires properly inflated. Underinflation reduces fuel economy, but morern importantly, tires low on airrn degrade handling and braking, wear more rapidly and can overheat and blowout.

rn

rn

The Daily Drive

rn

rn

Slow down and drive the speed limit. On the highway, aerodynamic drag causes fuelrn economy to drop offrn significantly as speeds increase above 50 mph.

rn

Avoid “jackrabbit” starts and hard acceleration. These actions greatly increasern fuel consumption.

rn

To idle or not to idle.

rn

Avoid extended idling to warm up the engine, even in winter. It’s unnecessary andrn wastes fuel.

rn

Avoid prolonged idling in general. If your car will be stopped for more than 60rn seconds, shut off the enginern to save fuel. Many newer cars have automatic engine stop-start systems that do this.

rn

When driving in town, adjust your speed to “time” the traffic lights. This reducesrn repeated braking andrn acceleration that consume additional fuel.

rn

When approaching a red light or stop sign, take your foot off the gas early andrn allow your car to coast downrn to a slower speed until it is time to brake.

rn

Accelerate smoothly with light to moderate throttle. This allows the automaticrn transmission to upshift intorn higher gears sooner, reducing engine rpm and saving fuel.

rn

Use cruise control to help maintain a constant speed and save fuel. However, neverrn use cruise control onrn slippery roads because a loss of vehicle control could result.

rn

If your car has a manual transmission, upshift as soon as you can withoutrn “lugging” the engine. Whenrn practical, you can also save fuel by skip-shifting – for example, going directly from first gear to third.

rn

rn

Don’t be Fueled into Wasting Gas

rn

rn

The practices above will definitely help improve fuel economy. Also keep these more general fuel saving tips inrn mind:

rn

Minimize your use of air conditioning. Even at highway speeds, open windows havern less effect on fuel economyrn than the engine power required to operate the air conditioning compressor.

rn

Plan ahead to accomplish multiple errands in one trip, and whenever possiblern travel outside high-trafficrn times of day.

rn

If you own more than one car, use the most fuel efficient model that meets thern needs of any given journey.rn

rn

rn

Fuel Economy Myths

rn

rn

In hot weather, park in the shade or use a windshield sunscreen to lessen heatrn buildup inside the car. Thisrn reduces the need for air conditioning (and thus fuel) to cool down the car.

rn

Remove unnecessary and bulky items from your car. It takes more fuel to acceleratern a heavier car, and thern reduction in fuel economy is greater for small cars than larger models.

rn

Minimize your use of roof racks and remove special carriers when not in use. Onrn the highway even an emptyrn bike, canoe or ski rack can reduce fuel economy, and a loaded rack or car-top container will have a major effect onrn gas mileage.

rnrn

Research has found that unless premium fuel is recommended or required by yourrn car’s manufacturer, it providesrn no added benefit. Motorists should refer to their vehicle’s owner’s manual to check which type of gasoline isrn recommended for their engine.rn

lets play ball graphic

rnrn

Let’s Play Ball came to fruition because of a friendship between two people with a vision. Max Engel / Seattle Prep Baseball Coach and Gwendy Daub / Deputy Director of Bridge of Promise & a parent of a child with cerebral palsy were having a conversation about sports, and what our members at Bridge of Promise like to do for fun. “Could we ever play a baseball game together, what would that look like?” was how it all started. We would need a field, baseball jerseys, food for after the game, and of course supporters. Fast forward to 2017 to the first annual game, we were fortunate to receive support from Honda Auto Center of Bellevue for Jerseys, an anonymous donor sponsored the bbq after the game, the team of boys from Seattle Prep Baseball, and about 20 Bridge of Promise members met on a local baseball field, the rest happened naturally. The prep boys partnered themselves up with a Bridge of Promise member to take the field as partners in a friendly, no rules, all fun game of baseball. The scene was priceless, smiles were endless and the day was full of love, laughter, baseball, and new friendships were made. We had members sliding on their bellies near or not anywhere near the base as they were attempting to make a score for their team and the prep player supported and cheered them the whole way! There were no boundaries between anyone, everyone was accepted and everyone played the game. This event is for people of all ages, all abilities and everyone wins! There were wheelchairs going in all directions as the prep player would push and run as quickly as they could to help the BOP member make the play! At the end of the game, everyone had smiles from ear to ear, and Max and Gwendy just looked at each other and said “it worked! Let’s do it again next year!” The players were asking when the next game would be, before they had even left the field. This is an event that will go on and on, for the love of the game and the people playing it!

Project CATCON ID Eventrnrn
rnrnLearn Morernrn

Honda Auto Center of Bellevue is proud to partner with the Bellevue, WA, Police Department for the first Project CATCON ID event. This event aims to help deter catalytic converter theft in our community.

rnrn

According to law enforcement authorities, catalytic converters have been stolen in increasing numbers across the country. For example, in Bellevue, Washington, the city’s police department has seen a significant increase in thefts of catalytic converters, mirroring what law enforcement agencies throughout the United States are reporting.

rnrn

What is a Catalytic Converter, and Why Are They Stolen?

rnrn

Catalytic converters are used on cars with internal combustion engines to convert harmful exhaust gases into less harmful pollutants. The converters contain precious metals in a muffler-like component attached to the exhaust pipe.

rnrn

They are valuable pieces of equipment because they contain precious metals like platinum and palladium. But, unfortunately, that makes them valuable to thieves too.

rnrn

Catalytic converters are easily accessible underneath a vehicle, and thieves can steal them in just minutes. These expensive stolen components are then sold to scrap metal yards for the precious metals they contain. It can cost car owners up to thousands of dollars to replace a stolen catalytic converter.

rnrn

The loss of a vehicle’s catalytic converter is both inconvenient and costly. It is also illegal to drive your car without one.

rnrn

Ways to Prevent Catalytic Converter Theft Around Bellevue

rnrn

To help prevent catalytic converter thievery, the Bellevue Police Department is working with local businesses to start Project CATCON ID, which aims to educate people on how to deter catalytic converter theft.

rnrn

At Project CATCON ID events, local drivers from Seattle to Renton, WA, can have their catalytic converters etched with the last eight digits of the vehicle identification number (VIN), then highlighted with bright high-temperature paint.

rnrn

rnrn
rn

Bellevue Police are betting that etching, painting and registering the pricey automobile components will deter them from being sold on by thieves. In addition, since the stolen catalytic converters will be more easily identifiable, they will pose a risk to scrap yards and other potential purchasers.

Bellevue Police Chief, Wendell Shirley, said the intent is for thieves to avoid the painted catalytic converters due to the increased risk of trying to sell them once stolen.

Plus, the catalytic converter etching and registration process may help law enforcement identify the owner and solve the crime if a stolen converter is recovered.
